The FIA Institute has launched its first annual review, entitled 'Formula for Safety', which aims to give readers an overview of the FIA Institute and its objectives as well as an in-depth insight into some of its present and future projects.
The review’s content comprises a look at the work of the FIA Institute’s six research and working groups and an outline of the new Centre of Excellence programme. It also includes endorsements about the FIA Institute from drivers and senior industry figures, such as Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Loeb and Ford’s Jost Capito.
The launch of the publication marks the swift progress made in motor sport safety research in the two years since the FIA Institute launched. As FIA Institute President Professor Sid Watkins expressed in his introduction to Formula for Safety: “It is the FIA Institute’s commitment to rapid progress which is perhaps the most satisfying. In our first two years we have already commissioned more than 50 projects, the vast majority of which will have a very significant bearing on the way we go racing and rallying.”
Two senior motor sport journalists contributed to the publication, writing in-depth articles about three of these projects. Michael Schmidt, Formula One Editor for German magazine Auto Motor und Sport, looked at the development of a new High Speed Safety Barrier which can protect drivers in high speed impacts, at even the most constricted of circuits. Mark Hughes, Grand Prix Editor for UK magazine Autosport, examined the revolutionary Young Driver’s Helmet project and the latest research into the development of a new FIA Safety Seat Standard.
Darren Heath, one of the foremost photographers in Formula One was commissioned for key images in the review and archive pictures were supplied by LAT.
'Formula for Safety' was first distributed at the FIA Institute’s second annual General Assembly, which took place in Barcelona on October 19, 2006.
