Issue 05 | Track to the Future

This issue takes an in-depth look at some of the major environmental initiatives taking place in motor sport and what can be expected for the future of eco-technology. The Special Report highlights the ways motor sport is embracing a green future through more efficient engines, environmentally-focused circuit designs, hybrid systems and alternative fuels. A feature discusses how the FIA ensures all Formula One circuits achieve the highest grade of safety before they are fit to host top championships. Peter Hodgman, manager of McLaren’s vehicle technology department, discusses his role in developing new safety concepts for motor sport. This edition also provides an update on the Facility Improvement Programme, part of the Motor Sport Safety Development Fund, highlighting the recent release of a best practice guide on circuit design.

Issue 04 | Secure the Perimeter

This issue takes an in-depth look at the rise of new state-of-the art circuits, which have been designed to the highest safety standards. The Special Report focuses on tracks from around the world renowned for their high levels of safety, including the FIA Institute’s two Centres of Excellence, the Bahrain International Circuit and the Paul Ricard High Tech Test Track. This edition also provides an update on the FIA Institute’s work with the Motor Sport Safety Development Fund, highlighting the recent selection of Apex Circuit Design as the first Facilities Advisory Partner. This is complemented by an interview with Apex Founding Director Clive Bowen. Other features include an interview with NASCAR’s new Director of Safety Initiatives Tom Gideon, an in-depth look at debris fences and a report on the highly successful re-launch of the FIA Formula Two Championship.

Issue 03 | Safe Landing

This issue takes an in-depth look at progress made in rally safety and the many new features that helped Jari Matti Latvala walk away unharmed from his huge crash at 2009 Rally Portugal. This is complemented by an interview with Ford World Rally team technical director Christian Loriaux, who talks about his career in rallying and his continuing support for developments in motor sport safety. The Special Report focuses on Driver Equipment and how manufacturers are dealing with the double challenge of passing the FIA’s rigorous safety standards whilst meeting drivers’ demands for lightweight materials, comfort and durability. Other highlights include features on KERS safety and crash testing in karting as well as a report on the development of the FIA Institute’s new website.

Issue 02 | Developing Nations

This issue features a Special Report on the Motor Sport Safety Development Fund and the FIA Institute's role in managing the programmes of the Fund. The Fund has agreed grants for over 25 projects across North America, South America, Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia, ranging from the training of marshals in emerging markets to safety internship programmes and young driver scholarships. The Special Report takes an in-depth look at six of those projects. The Fund's Management Committee is chaired by seven-time Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher, who is also interviewed in this issue. Schumacher talks in depth about the Fund project and his continuing work to develop safety both on the track and on the road.

Issue 01 | Walking away

The publication aims to inform the motor sport community about the latest developments in safety and highlight the work of the FIA Institute and its partners. Each issue, distributed bi-monthly, includes news and features on the latest safety projects as well as interviews with leading figures in the motor sport industry. The first Special Report focuses on Testing and specifically the test facilities that carry them out. The FIA Institute's research projects would not be possible without the help of these state-of-the-art testing facilities. As you will see, they are continually pushing the boundaries of technology and helping break new ground in motor sport safety research.
