The selection process for the 2014 Young Driver Excellence Academy took place in 2013 with five qualifying events taking place across the world. The new format provided the opportunity for many more young drivers to apply for the Academy.
Drivers were able to compete for selection locally with qualifying events taking place in different geographical regions. Every FIA National Sporting Authority (ASN) in each region could nominate one driver to attend the Each of the five qualifiers produced one winner to go forward to the 2013/14 Young Driver Excellence Academy. Further drivers were selected using a wildcard system, making a total of 10 participants in the final Academy group.
The 2014 Academy itself, which offers a fully-funded training programme to help develop their motor sport careers whilst increasing safety skills and promoting fairness and responsibility on and off the track, is a similar format to previous years with drivers again benefitting from the expert tutelage of former Formula One driver Alex Wurz alongside former World Rally Champion co-driver Robert Reid.
